Scotts flat fishing report12/27/2023 ![]() ![]() You pass a couple houses well above the lake.Nevada County offers a broad variety of fishing destinations In bloom: gooseberry, pine violet, manzanita and some non-native cherry trees. The dense forest here is a mix of Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, madrone, live oak, black oak and dogwood, with patches of chaparral and shoreline alders and willows. The narrow path follows an old abandoned flume, crosses three shallow small creeks then ends in about 1 mile at the dam. I parked about 100 yards above the end of the road (and launch area) and hiked for the first time on a well-worn shoreline trail heading west toward the dam. But the launch is public and open to small boats (row boat, canoe, kayak). Then you have the uneasy feeling you are in someone’s front yard A large house looms over the launch area. I wouldn’t want to be here when the road is really wet. (This day, there were some muddy spots and flowing water across the road in a few places, but my 2WD truck handled it fine.) The turnaround at the end is a bit tight, especially if a few cars are parked there. There are no signs directing visitors to the lake and many signs on the dirt access road deter visitors with warnings about the road conditions. ![]() There’s nothing about it on the NID website. Also called Deer Creek Reservoir, this picturesque aquamarine lake is not well known, despite being public Nevada Irrigation District property. A 50 foot waterfall drops from Lower Scotts Flat Lake to Deer CreekĪt the end of Scotts Flat Dam Road (off Scotts Flat Road), about 10 miles from downtown Nevada City, is the beautiful Lower Scotts Flat Lake.
